Meteorites • Sikhote-Alin
Location: Sikhote-Alin Mountain Range, Maritime Territory (Eastern Siberia), Russia
Type: Iron Octahedrite, Coarsest (9.0mm) IIB
Fall: The largest observed fall in history, occurred at 10:38 am on February 12, 1947. An estimated 70-ton or more Bolide type flew in at over 30,000 miles per hour and began exploding 3-1/2 miles up and continued until the impact blew shrapnel out of the craters formed. Sharp, deformed fragments have been pulled out of nearby trees. Explosions were felt/heard and windows broken up to 100 miles away. The strewn field covers a 1.2 square mile area with over 120 craters, the largest of which is 85 x 20 feet. Total known; 23,000 kilograms. The thumbprint, or regmaglypts, pattern formed as fragments ablated in our upper atmosphere. They are the most commonly thought of type of meteorite (they look like what the average person thinks of when speaking or reading about them).
Sikhote Alin are priced $1.00 per gram.
